What is Morpholomancy?

Morpholomancy is a cooperative rules-lite micro-RPG for 3-6 players and the debut game for the dynamic duo of David and Nisa. With only a d10, index cards, and the power of multi-part words, players harness their creativity to fight through a series of randomly-generated obstacles on a quest to pass their final exam and become Morpholomancers!

How Does it Work?

Each player writes words of at least 2 morphemes (word-parts) on notecards before cutting each into 2 pieces, splitting up at least 2 of the morphemes (such as “bird/feeder” or “toxic/ity”). These newly-divided morphemes are shuffled and spread equally among the players.

In play, arranging two or more morphemes together creates new words imbued with power - the effectiveness of these words depends on how well the players can convince the Morphological Master that their spell fits the occasion. During their exam, it is up to the players to work together to create new words that will help them overcome the challenge!

About the Designers

David II is an avid gamer, both on tabletop and PC. His bookshelf is teeming with TTRPG books, zines, and supplements. A corporate drone by day, he’s channeling his mundane malaise into building fantastical worlds to share with others.

Nisa is a linguist and all-around language fiend. This game came about after lamenting to David about the dearth of language-centric TTRPGs and subjecting him to an enthusiastic “Linguistics 101” crash course he totally didn’t ask for. More acquainted with creative worldbuilding, Nisa is now learning the nitty-gritty details behind TTRPG creation.

Ann Ding is a multi-talented visual artist with a particular focus on video game concept art. She has been dipping into the TTRPG space while freelancing and enjoys weaving her Chinese-American heritage, love for video games and animated media, and interests in nature into her evocative designs.
